What do we do with our emotions? Few questions generate so much contradictory advice, even within the church. “Don’t live by your feelings.” “Listen to your anger.” “Anxiety is sinful unbelief.” “Faith is not a feeling.” “Love is an action, not an emotion.” “If you love God, you should delight in him.” Christians often feel tension between the counsel that they receive in the pastor’s office or on the therapist’s couch. This session will propose a clear model for understanding emotions, their significance, and how they are formed.

Matthew LaPine’s Bio

Matthew A. LaPine is Director of Equipping at Citylight Church in Omaha, Nebraska, where he preaches and teaches. He earned his PhD from Trinity Evangelical Divinity School under the supervision of Kevin Vanhoozer. His dissertation was published by Lexham Press in 2020 as The Logic of the Body and was named a finalist for Christianity Today’s Book Awards in Theology and Ethics. Matthew writes on theology, emotion, and mental health and is passionate about practicing theology in the context of the local church. A native of Duluth, Minnesota, he is married to Molly, and they have three daughters.
